deadly virus for kids.... ROTAVIRUS. how to manage?

since my lil qist hospitalised, alhamdulillah she has been very strong and recovered very fast. no more vomitting, no more high temperature, no more watery diarrhoea *yeay* reading thru about this virus, i knew most of mommies could identify this but i still want to share also about this

deadly ROTAVIRUS

what is it?

Most common cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children
By the age of five, nearly every child in the world has been infected with rotavirus at least once. however, with each infection, immunity develops, and subsequent infections are less severe
Once a child is infected by the virus, there is an incubation period of about two days before symptoms appear.
Outbreaks of rotavirus A diarrhoea are common among hospitalised infants, young children attending day care centres, and elderly people in nursing homes

what are the symptoms?

Symptoms often start with vomiting followed by four to eight days of profuse diarrhoea.
starting with mild to severe vomiting
watery diarrhoea
low-grade fever *in qist's case, its very high temp.. up to 39.5degC*

all of the above will lead to severe dehydration

what is the dehydration symptoms?

dry, cool skin
absence of tears when crying
dry or sticky mouth
sunken eyes or sunken fontanelle (the soft spot on the head of infants)
extreme thirst

how it is spread?

The primary mode of transmission of rotavirus is the passage of the virus in stool to the mouth of another child. This is known as a fecal-oral route of transmission. Children can transmit the virus when they forget to wash their hands before eating or after using the toilet.
Touching a surface that has been contaminated with rotavirus and then touching the mouth area can result in infection. *i think becoz qist love to suck her fingers*

how it is treated?

Depending on the severity of diarrhoea, treatment consists of oral rehydration, during which the child is given extra water to drink that contains small amounts of salt and sugar.
Some infections are serious enough to warrant hospitalisation where fluids are given by intravenous drip or nasogastric tube *this is my lil qist's case*, and the child's electrolytes and blood sugar are monitored

above all, this virus mainly cause death due to sever dehydration. so parents~~~ do monitor ur kids especially when they have abnormal symptoms e.g. vomit, high temp. some parent are not aware of this until it became very very bad!

keep watching ur kids ya~
