The first recognition of Father's Day is believed to have been held on June 19, 1910. Sonora Dodd, of Spokane Washington, envisioned the holiday one Sunday afternoon while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church. Sonora's father, William Smart, was a Civil War veteran who had taken care of all of his six children after his wife had died. Sonora wanted a celebration that honored fathers that were compassionate, like her own father. With the help of the Spokane Ministerial association, and the members of the YMCA, she arranged a tribute for her father in Spokane. Many community member supported the idea and arrived at the event wearing either a a red rose or a white rose. The red rose symbolized the appreciation for a living father, while a white rose honored a deceased one.
